Pocono Point RV site P16
Leihighton, Pa
Our campground is located just a few miles from Jim Thorpe, Pa, a very touristy town. Seeing as the rain lasted for only one day and the sun is shining today, the two-legged hopped in the RAM and decided to investigate Jim Thorpe. I, once again, was left in charge of guarding our roomy sites.
This borough used to be named Mauch Chunk, but was renamed in honor of the Native American sports legend Jim Thorpe. There is a memorial and grave site.
Thorpe was an Olympic Medalist
as well as recognized for his outstanding football featsHe also played baseball.
Very impressive legacy!!
Jim Thorpe is a crowed area where parking can be a challenge, but we scored a spot on the street with an easy to use kiosk to pay for our parking.
The area is quite hilly and not only has a railway that offers scenic train rides for the tourists, but the area is along side of Lehigh River although the hilly terrain doesn't always make that apparent.
The two-legged planned well. They decided to walk to Molly Maguires for a light lunch
saving room to go to an ice cream shop recommended by Kathy and Greg for dessert. Their menu was impressive serving both soft ice cream in numerous flavors as well as 'hand dipped'/hard ice cream flavors.Auntie Carol loves pistashio which they offered as a soft ice cream. She said she missed the nuts that she is used to in the hard ice cream. Uncle Steve had his never changing selection of chocolate. The downside of the visit had to do with the single gal working at Woods. Uncle Steve and Aunt Carol had ordered first so the gal prepared their selections. They had almost finished by the time Momma and Dad received their order. When Momma's order arrived, it didn't look anything like what she was expecting. I guess you can chalk it up to a lack of communication. She ordered the 'hand dipped' ice cream in a cone. What she received was not the hard ice cream, but the soft ice cream dipped in that nasty chocolate/waxy coating. Yuck!! Dad was disappointed in his sundae as well. He said what sounded so good, lacked flavor. The vanilla soft ice cream held a light coating of chocolate, peanut butter topping that was not very impressive on the ho-hum flavorless vanilla. Oh well! Maybe they'll have better luck at their next ice cream adventure. It seems we are in Jim Thorpe at what the locals refer to as their "pre tourist season" so not everything is open. The Asa Parker mansion built in 1861 for the philanthropist, railroad magnate has 3 stories, 18 rooms and over 11,000 square feet of living space. It is only open on the weekend at this time of year but the trusty Ram climbed the hill on the narrow street that is restricted for buses and large trucks for a 'drive by' view.
Right next door, his son Harry Packer build what has the look of a haunted mansion from the outside, but is elegant inside. You can reserve one of the many guest rooms or book an event such as a wine tasting or a private function.
By the time the two-legged returned to me, I was ready for some action. I offered to referee the corn hole game but all they kept doing was calling interference....caused by ME. WELL, I'm insulted for sure.
Today's evening game was Five Crown. Uncle Steve said he holds the record for wins when he and Auntie Carol play, but Momma was the ungracious hostest and narrowly beat him at the end of the last round. But Dad made up for Momma's win by being the largest score loser.
I'm just glad they came my way to play. Auntie Carol ALWAYS arrives with treats in her pocket and is willing to toss by inside ball for me. It wasn't hard to train her!!
I'm Chloe
