Today they hurried off to the Farmers and Traders Market in Annapolis Royal. They said they felt cheated because in Annapolis Royal there is loads of free parking. That eliminated the challenging game of trying to follow prompts on a kiosk to pay for parking as in St John.
The market was small but worth the visit. This is strawberry season here. The vendor said she grows the berries in her berry patch.
There were a variety of items for sale at the small market including specialty soaps, knitted items, hand made aprons, cheeses, jams, jewelry, flowers and fresh vegetables.
But what took Dad's eye was the German bakery right next door. Uncle Steve had made a stop at the barbershop and reappeared just in time to enter the bakery with Dad. Coffee and cinnamon buns for the guys.
Aunt Carol decided to purchase a cookie snack for later in the day.
The day continued with a visit to Port-Royal National Historic Site. Upon arrival, it began to rain but the radar showed if we waited it out for a few minutes, the storm would pass by and we would have a dry tour. While we were waiting out the rain, a couple parked next to us and seeing Uncle Steve's vanity plate on the front of his Jeep, turned and gave him the Florida State Seminole tomahawk chop. Come to find out, they are with the Fantasy Tour group and they currently have a house in Crossville, Tennessee about 5 houses away from the couple who were the tail runners when Uncle Steve and Aunt Carol went on their Alaskan Caravan. And to make things even more interesting, she graduated from the same NY state university that Momma graduated from. And here we all are in Nova Scotia.
In 1939, using sketches and information gathered, Port-Royal NHS was recreated/rebuilt to preserve and act as an interpretation of the early French settlement from the early 1600's.
The site had a well in the center with buildings forming a square around that center courtyard.
Lots of attention to detail was put into this site.
This gal in period dress was using a mallet on a piece of white ash wood to distress the fibers enough to cause the wood to grain to separate into thin wooden strips that could be woven into baskets.
After leaving Port-Royal NHS, the jeep took us on an investigative tour of the peninsula we were on. The road followed the coastline with homes spread out along the way.
And then ....we ran out of pavement. Uncle Steve said, 'Now we are really jeeping.' Bumpity-bump
Everyone decided to follow the dinner recommendation from the volunteer at Port-Royal NHS. The Crow's Nest wasn't hard to locate as she gave good directions.
Momma and Dad decided to share the seafood platter with scallops, clams and haddock while Uncle Steve and Aunt Carol stuck with haddock filets.
The after dinner drive took us to the end of this peninsula. You don't have to worry about driving down the hill and into the water. Those rocks will stop you for sure....but if you have any kind of speed coming off the hill, you may not live to tell about it.
As evening rolled around, and it was close to game time, Dad was hugging the porcelian bowl and was sweating profusely. It seems he would be giving the throne a workout for a while..sit, bend over, sit...you get the idea, I'm sure. Luckily, Momma's attack began about the time Dad freed up the toilet for her use. WHAT A NIGHT!! Maybe they shouldn't have eaten that crow's nest?!?
Thankfully, tomorrow is not a travel day but it appears that it will become a recovery day for Momma and Dad. An eye opening lesson here: Don't eat out the night before a travel day. Thank goodness we had that day to recover!!
