Chores

While out and about yesterday, we came upon a roadside produce stand advertising their last day of sales for this year....thus produce prices had been reduced.  It was the perfect time to snag some fresh corn, tomatoes and peppers at a nice price.  So this morning, while Dad headed out to get our tire with the nail repaired, Momma and I whipped up a batch of chili sauce, an apple pie, and some bread while catching up on the laundry, seeing as we didn't have sewer hook up at our previous campsite.  I guess you could call it catch up day.

Dad not only got the tire repaired, they rotated his tires and hung the spare back under the bed of the truck. He had a big smile when he returned😁

So the next project was to wash the truck.  Definitely a catch up/chores day!

That was okay by me as I got several games of ball in today while everyone was hanging around the campsite.

Momma said it was nice to be able to shed the jacket ...... she had been wearing several layers while in Vermont.  According to the local weather man, it is a bit warmer than typical for this time of year and the chilly days are right around the corner.  In other words, expect a high of 64 on Wednesday instead of today's temp of 74.

I'm sure glad I have an all-weather coat!

Car show

September 29,  2024

The Tailgate Pedicure was open for business this morning.

That happened after the two-legged finished washing and drying Pam's fifth wheel.

Momma had even mentioned something about a tubby.  I think she wanted to play in the water some more, but it was just a tad on the chilly side for that, especially when the soft breeze blew.  But I think the fact that Bob and Kathy came by is what really saved my coat.

The gang decided to head to the car show and chicken bbq being held today.  Being a small town, their expectation was a small display.  Wrong!  There were over 200 on display from all over.

It took a while to walk the grounds, viewing all the vehicles on display so by the time they went to purchase the bbq, they were sold out.  So much for a late lunch of chicken off the grill.  It was time to move on to dessert.

The banana splits are served in a cup

It is getting near the end of the ice cream season, so the stand is reducing the number of days in the week that they will be open until they close down for the summer after Columbus Day.  Momma said they even have a pup cup on their menu.

Travel back into New York

 September 28, 2024

St. Johnsville, New York

Momma was excited as we began our travel day,  winding our way down Prospect Mountain this morning.  The sun was shining and the colors were even better than yesterday.

Dad was getting excited as well, but for a whole different reason.  He announced, "We either have a faulty truck tire sensor or a flat.  I'm hoping it's just the sensor reading of 33 pounds that is incorrect."

At the bottom of the mountain, there is a large pull off area created for large trucks to have a place to chain up in the winter.  It was the perfect place to check on that tire.

The mystery was solved.

Time to dig out the spare and change a tire.  Looks like we picked up a nail.  So Dad and his 'assistant' got down and dirty.

The good thing about the whole situation was the roomy, paved parking lot.  Especially seeing at it was the tire on the driver's side, which would have been the traffic side, if we had to pull off to the side of the road.

The rest of the trip was uneventful.  As we pulled into our site, Momma and Dad decided to wash off all that road grime before deploying the slides...so out came the hose, bucket, brush, squeegie and towel.  We sparkle once again.

Cousin Diane extended an invitation for dinner tonight.  What a lovely flower garden she has.

I wasn't invited to join them.  I might have enjoyed meeting Micki, the cat.

Add another year

 September 27, 2024

Greenwood Lodge and CG site 38

Woodford, Vermont

Dad said I needed to be quiet this morning and let Momma sleep in so I rested along side of the bed until she stirred at 7:45.   I guess she must have really been tired out to sleep in...or maybe she is just OLD...as today is her birthday.  Add on another year, Momma.

Pam started the day off making a delicious breakfast treat for everyone.  That's everyone but me, of course.  Maple cream cheese stuffed French toast with Vermont Maple Syrup.  Wow!  From all the ooh's and ahh's it must have been tasty.  Maybe Momma should have another birthday tomorrow so the breakfast can be repeated.  Oh wait, she celebrates the whole month so that could work!!

The sun is shining today.  The two days of drizzle rain has subsided so now the fall colors can be appreciated even more.

As the two-legged headed down Prospect Mountain and into Bennington, Momma attempted to snap a couple of shots.

Pam said you really don't have to leave the campground to get some nice pictures.

They were headed to the Bennington Battle Monument for a birds-eye-view of 3 states.  Ride along on the approach to the TALL monument.

The first design was rejected.  It was felt that the monument was too small.
This is now the current gift shop where tickets can be purchased.

It was a great day to enjoy the views from the narrow windows.
To the north....Green Mountain, Vermont.
To the south....Massechusetts
To the east......Green Mountain

To the west....... New York
Now you may be wondering how everyone reached the top of that TALL monument.
The elevator,
operated by a staff member, is the only way available to reach the observation level, taking just over a minute to rise. The steps, being made of stone, tend to be damp and slippery.  With no railings available, they are closed off to the public as a safety measure.

Departing the monument, they followed the suggestion of a local and took the route led to the covered bridges.
All three covered bridges look identical.  They all are positioned over the Walloomsac River allowing vehicles to cross from Bennington to North Bennington.

All are one lane with a height of 10' 6" and were well maintained.

While in North Bennington, they took a tour of Park-McCullough Historic Governor's Mansion.  Vermont didn't have a governor's house.  The governor resided in his personal house.  I just so happens that two governors resided in this house.

The tour was self guided, but by using the available QR code, you could hear a relation from the McCullough family describe each room that still houses original furniture.
Check out the ceiling medalion that was present in most of the downstair rooms

Ladies Parlor....guests kept their coats as they would need to leave if other callers arrived.                   On one day, 75 guests were received.

All the bedrooms were located on the second floor

The children used to slide down the banisters

The help/staff had rooms on the fourth floor with lower ceilings.  The females earned $15 to $20 a week while the male earned $25.  There were usually 20 under employment.

Only the first two floors were available to tour which didn't include the kitchen area, but there were still plenty of the 40+ rooms that were open for viewing.  The docent said tours end in October as the house is just too cold to be comfortable for visitors. It was plenty cool enough today in the mansion for the Floridians!  None of the fireplaces were lit.

Today, now that it is no longer drizzling, I FINALLY got to make use of all that space around our rig.

It's time to play ball...

We are located in a 'private' area with our power boxes attached to the rear corners of the building.  The building appears to be used for storage.

Greenwood Lodge and Campground is actually located adjacent to Prospect Mountain Ski Resort.  Skiers can stay at the lodge in the winter and campers can set up on the sites.  There is even a pond that comes with the offer of free use of a canoe or rowboat.  The only downside is no sewer at the sites....dump station only.  And Dad frowned at all the pine needles that collected on his awning.  With the wet ground, those pine needles seemed to get carried right inside by sticking to shoes and paws.  But I still am happy with my giant 'yard'!!
