Elephant Head CG site 6
Trout River, NL
Dad really lucked out today. He got to keep his wallet in his pocket. The gang went to the Discovery Center to learn about the unique Tablelands and how they were formed. As it turned out, Parks Canada was holding a 50 year celebration so they waved the admittance charge. Everyone got in for free!
And Aunt Carol and Uncle Steve scored hugs...well...kind of....
The well done videos and graphic displays went into detail about how Gros Morne Mountain and the Tablelands were formed.
Part of the Parks Celebration Ceremony included live music. The performers were warming up and as Uncle Steve put it....they were way too loud for the room so there was need to suffer that presentation today.
It was on to view the unusual creation of the Tablelands and to snap some photo memories.
Notice the red coloring of the Tablelands that were actually pushed up from the ocean floor years ago.
Our original plan was for a 3 night stay in this area, but everyone said they felt 2 nights were plenty as there wasn't any other enticing adventures here for them. If they had younger bodies they might have tackled some of the trails, but Dad's knee said NO WAY!
They tried to call the next campground to see if they could arrive a day early. Did I mention how poor cell service is? A Park Ranger overheard and offered the use of a land-line phone to call the campground.
That offer, once again, reinforced how friendly and helpful the Newfies are. Paul took us into the 'behind the scenes area' to the location of a land-line phone. Success, departure from Trout River is set for a day earlier than originally planned which will make our ferry travel more relaxed and get us back into a less remote area sooner.
Instead of arriving at Grand Codroy CG and spending just the afternoon before heading to Port aux Basque's ferry terminal, we will be able to arrive a day earlier and get a good night of rest before heading to the ferry the following evening. The campground had plenty of empty sites to accommodate us. Uncle Steve had a pull thru so he didn't even have to disconnect his jeep from the motorhome.
And are you ready for this.....the charge was a full night rate for the first night and just a late departure fee of $15 for our evening departure. I've been charged $10 for arriving just one hour early in the USA. What a refreshing attitude here. We will certainly miss that!!
Well, the plan went smoothly but Momma was upset once again as there wasn't enough wind to keep the bugs away and she got attacked twice while unhooking and getting set up at Grand Codroy Campground. A final fairwell itch or two to take with her when they depart Newfoundland. Momma says, at least it won't be a keepsake that lasts forever. 😜
I'm Chloe
