Enjoying Port au Choix

 August 10, 2023

Oceanside RV CG site 11

Port au Choix, NL

This running off and leaving me at the rig is pretty scary today.  The noise from the flapping slide toppers has quit now that Dad has tossed a rope over them, but there is a bit of rock and roll from all that wind today.  I guess I'll just take a deep breath and let it rock me to sleep.  Dad said there is no need to for me to worry.  But he told Momma to be careful when she opens the truck door as the wind could rip it right out of her hand.  Momma says she'll take all this wind anyday over the nipping bugs.

By the way, Dad's finger is healing up nicely.  Momma removed his stitches on the 24th of July.

The gang headed off to the National Historic Site, Parks Canada.

The display talked about what has been learned from the archaeologists findings in this area.  There have been five different groups who have settled in this area and lived off the land and sea over the past years.  Not only did they learn about the past inhabitants on this coast, but they had an interesting conversation with the employee who shared his life story.  It is similar to the stories heard from others.  He is currently 62 and was able to return here after being away for 22 years.  He, like his father was a fisherman until the fishing moratorium.  Fishing was all he knew as that was his education.   And he was good at it....until they weren't allowed to fish anymore.   He moved his family to Alberta and drove heavy equipment until he was able to move back to this area.  But his kids were educated away from here in the universities and married and settled elsewhere.  He said the population of Port au Choix is around 700 if you count the dogs and cats.  The young aren't returning to settle here after graduating from university.

They continued down the road to see the lighthouse in the daylight and were treated to a caribou sighting.  It appears the caribou enjoy feeding near the lighthouse.

It was a windy day, but Aunt Carol and Uncle Steve decided to try out the red chairs anyway.

Dinner tonight was at the Sea Echo, owned by the aunt of Todd, who had checked us into this campground.  Fresh cod on the menu.

The waitress, Josee, had a great personality and enjoyed teasing Uncle Steve when he asked if she was Todd's aunt, who come to find out is in her 80's.  Josee said, 'You think I look 80?'

Dad tried and enjoyed the pie made from the local partridge berries.
Once again, the gang headed out for a moose hunt as the sun was setting.

Good hunting once again....and with enough daylight left for photos.

Another delightful day.

I'm Chloe
