PEI to New Brunswick

 August 28, 2023

Stonehurst Golf and RV site 102

Moncton, NB

Today was our day to cross the 8 mile Confederation Bridge as we departed Prince Edward Island.  You don't pay to arrive on the island.  You pay when you depart.  Our route had us departing via the bridge which is 40% cheaper than the ferry.

With our four axles, it cost us $67.25.  I guess if you factor in the free ferry ride to the island, it really isn't as expensive as is sounds.

Traffic flowed smoothly on the bridge.

We are now in New Brunswick.

We will miss the fertile fields of potatoes, corn, hay, and sunflowers on Prince Edward Island.  Lots of farmland on the island.

And we will miss our lovely grassy site that was perfect for a game of Murbles (similar to Bocce).
I'm not the only one who enjoys playing ball in the grass, but my balls have a bounce to them while the balls the two-legged use just roll.

After arriving in Moncton, we made plans to see another interesting phenomenal occurance caused by the tide.  Moncton has a nice area to view the Tidal Bore that occurs twice in 24 hours.

The tidal bore schedule for tonight was listed as 8:14 pm but the recommnedation is to arrive early as it could occur 30 minutes earlier or later.  It was a good thing that we arrived early as the tidal bore arrived about 15 minutes early.  Perfect timing as it was right before sunset.

We saw someone on a paddle board go out into the water so we had hopes of an extra show, but they missed the wave and never made the ride down our way.

Tomorrow we will hit the road once again.  Maybe our next location will have some decent internet to make use of.   This post will be a late posting...internet here isn't very useful.

Charlottetown

It was bound to happen.  After two marvelous weather days with gorgeous blue skies, it is not only cloudy, it is raining!  Now if I thought trying to share bandwidth with the other campers on a sunny day was a challenge, just think what will be in store today.  Everyone will be indoors trying to stay dry instead of swimming in the large sized pool or playing on the playground or visiting with their seasonal friends or out touring like the gang has been doing.  Momma says internet here at this campground reminds her of internet before I was even born.  Back to the days of dial up...slow speed...internet.  Yawn😏😮

It's Saturday and the Farmer's Market is open in Charlottetown.  The weather didn't seem to keep anyone home, including us.  At least the market is inside a building housing the 60 vendors.

Sunflowers grow well in this area

Craft items for sale as well as food items
Mini donut making machine busy at work

Well attended Saturday morning market

Bread anyone?  Too many to choose from.

A ride around the streets of Charlottetown was up next....just to get a feel for the area.

This church was huge, covering city a block.

Being the capital of Prince Edward Island, it seemed only fitting that the Canadian Tire store was the largest we have seen.  Lots of inventory on the well stocked shelves in the store that was at least as large as a Super Walmart in the US.  Easy to get lost in for sure!  I know Uncle Steve will surely have withdrawals once we cross back into the US leaving Canadian Tire behind.

It's so sad not only having all that grass,

but having room to romp in it only to be told it is raining and you have to stay inside.  No ball playing in the rain.  Hey, I won't melt you know.

Another day on PEI

 August 25, 202

Pine Hills RV site 71

Charlottetown, PE

It all began with a postcard that a daughter sent to her dad.  He was retired and inspired to build bottle houses using thousands of bottles cemented together.

The cathedral even has bench bottle pews

The family has taken on the task of rebuilding the creations that had begun to deteriorate over time.

The gardens surrounding the buildings have been designed and nurtured with loving care.

The next stop was the lighthouse just a few miles down the highway.

Some unexpected hitch hikers stormed the inside of the Ram...hungry mosquitoes who smelled a feast.  It was a battle to see how many would meet their demise before they had a taste of human blood.

After yesterday's restaurant disappointment, everyone was a tad hesitant to try another recommendation from the same gal as they passed through Summerside.  The recommendation was for Holman's Homemade Ice Cream served in the historic home of the Holman family.

So many flavors to choose from.
Seeing as this was considered lunch, the guys opted for a sundae.  Blueberry lemon and Chocolate chocolate.

The consenus was good ice cream but Fielder's Choice in Bangor, Maine still takes first place.  Thanks Rosemary and Ken for the Fielder's Choice recommendation.

When we depart Prince Edward Island on Monday, we will be taking the 8 mile Confederation Bridge.  It took 4 years at a cost of 1 billion dollars to complete the bridge in June 1997.

There is no charge to arrive on PEI.  You only pay when you depart.  The ferry price is 40% higher than the bridge pricing so we got a bargain when we arrived as our route had us arriving via ferry.  We will depart via bridge on Monday paying a per axle price...$67.25 total for our six axles.  That's $8.40 a mile or $6.73 a minute as it should take us ten minutes to travel the bridge.

Aunt Carol found another black and white dog to share her treats        with as she was walking around our campground.

I think she should have taken me with her so I could have made a new friend.
