Round and round we go

 July 10, 2021

Crystal Rock CG, Sandusky, Ohio

We had a laid back start this morning which meant more ball time for me before the 3 hour drive from Indiana to our Ohio campground.  Departing at 10 and with a lunch break along the way, we arrived just before 2pm.

Momma said the gal in the office didn't haven't a clue.  We had back-in sites and with the way she had drawn our path to the sites, we would be parking on the blind side.  "Blind side??" the gal at the office asked.  "What's that?"  Dad took one look at the map and decided to make his own route and we successfully landed.  Uncle Steve attempted the map drawn route but when he arrived at the site, there was absolutely no way he could have manuvered into the site with the location of the trees and the raised wood laid down on the site to identfy a patio area, so around the loop he went for a different approach and a successful landing.

It sure didn't take them long to set up and head out.  Destination:  The Merry Go Round Museum in Sandusky.

The museum, which is housed in the old Post Office building is 31 years old.  It has a refurbished, working merry go round, complete with music, that tourists can ride on.
Hang on the pole Uncle Steve so that horse doesn't throw you.

The animals on the merry go round are not original to that carousel.  There is a team of volunteers who refurbish the animals.

That means stripping down the worn animal, repairing any damaged areas with new wood and filler, reattaching any broken pieces with dowels, lots of sanding and finally, painting.
Dad had an interesting conversation with one of the restorers.  He told Dad they are currently working on some pieces for a lady in Pasadena who is in the process of donating a merry go round on the west coast.

World War I put a halt to the Merry Go Round entertainment.

The right side of the animal is always more ornate and the outer animals are the 'stars/showcase' animals of the carousel.

The Worlitzer pipe organ housed in the center of the ring provides the music for the riders to enjoy.

I wish I could have joined them...but then the animals, being made of balsa wood wouldn't have been able to play.  They just go round and round all day long following the same path.
