Last days in Maine

August 19 - 20,  2018
Eastport, Maine

Sure enough, the sun came out, the temperature warmed up, and Momma and Dad took off for the day.  Directly across the water from Eastport is the summer cottage that was purchased for $5,000 and given as a wedding gift to Franklin D. Roosevelt by his mother.
It is actually in Canada on Campobello Island, an area that the wealthy flocked to in order to escape the summer heat in the early 1900's.  It has been preserved as an International Park that surprisingly has no charge to visit/tour.

Even though the cottage looks so close across the water from the shores of  Eastport, it took 40 minutes of roads to finally arrive at the bridge that would take us to the island.

The cottage tour was well done, led by a retired teacher

but the Fun Tour was even more entertaining.  The three young gals that led the Fun Tour had delved into the history and created an entertaining, interactive, informative program.  It's an optional tour, but one that you don't want to miss.

Monday's entertainment consisted of a couple of sessions with my favorite JUG toy.  Dad tosses and I retrieve until my tongue hangs out or Dad's arm gives out.  Whichever occurs first.

Momma's highlight of the day was the tour of Raye's Mustard.

It is the ONLY stone ground- without heat- process company still in operation. The operation hasn't varied much in over 100 years so the flavor hasn't been compromised as it has with more modern processes.  The big change was driving the belts by electric motor rather than steam engine and the addition of new flavors.  So many to choose from!!

Dad's highlight could be a toss up between the lobster roll they enjoyed for lunch
or watching the ships arriving at the pier.

Tomorrow is travel day, as soon as I get my lime booster. Another new vet to admire me.

I hope they let me in Canada.  I don't have a passport like Momma and Dad.  I can't wait to see Fundy Bay and the 25 foot changing tides.  I'd really love a taste of St. Martin's World's Best Clam Chowder.....I'm sure that won't happen.  I'll just have to smell Dad and Momma's breath.  Maybe someone will dribble on their shirt so I can clean it up.

I'm Chloe
