Fort Steuben

 October 2, 2023

Meadowbrooke CG site 17

Follansbee, WV

Historic Fort Steuben was on today's agenda. What a marvelous museum!! Not only are there nine buildings that make up the fort itself, but a welcome center building with great displays as well as a gift shop.

Even the foyer was decorated in a welcoming greeting for the visitors.

Fort Steuben was established in 1786 to house 150 men in the First Regiment plus the surveyors they were protecting.  The Northwest Territory was being surveyed because the government was anxious to sell the land as they need funds.

Check out this quiver.  Poor fox.

No battles were ever fought here, but the fort served its purpose.

Right next to the fort is the Market Street Suspension Bridge which originally opened in the summer of 1905. The bridge that spands the Ohio River is owned by West Virginia.  You are looking at the bridge from Ohio.
But once you cross the bridge, you are in West Virginia which offers fuel about 30 cents per gallon cheaper than the Ohio stations.

As you can see by the height limit, we won't be traveling that bridge when towing the 5er.

Needless to say, they have renovated several times over the years to keep the structure sound.

Steubenville has some talented artists who have added some 'life' to the historical area with about two dozen murals.

But the area that was pleasing to the eye as well as taste buds was the combination coffee shop, popcorn shop, ice cream shop and nutcracker shop.  Everyone took a mid day break and enjoyed taking a restful snack before venturing into the nutcracker area.  WOW!!  Talk about overload.

Not only were all the walls lined with shelves holding nutcrackers, but there were tables in the center of the room loaded down with additional displays.

I'm glad Dad got home so we could play some ball.  There is nothing better than a chasing a ball in this beautiful weather.

I'm Chloe
