Oh my gosh! I am SO excited I can hardly keep the wiggle out of my butt. Not only are we FINALLY taking a road trip, but my favorite Auntie Carol..and all her doggy treats....are coming along. Well, she is also bringing her husband Steve, but only so he can drive Auntie Carol and their rig. At least that's what I think. Hmm, I wonder if she enjoys his company as much as she does mine? She does spoil him as much as she does me, maybe even a tad more!!
We met at the rest area on I-75 just north of Belleview where I was treated to my first goodies from MY Auntie Carol. We rolled up the road smoothly with Momma behind the wheel. You see, Dad needed a shoulder replacement and some ligament repair and he still does not have full range of motion and full strength on the left side so he is being pampered a bit.
We smoothly landed in our pull thru sites for the night in Hahira, Georgia and didn't even unhitch. That gave us an early departure the next morning so we had plenty of time built in our schedule for a side trip to Dad's favorite meat market in Hawkinsville, Georgia.
Yep, grilled steak on the menu at the end of the day.
Momma said it was grilled to perfection. Personally, I wouldn't know as I wasn't even allowed a sniff, much less a taste.
Did you notice in the shot above the great parking job Steve did? He followed us all the way to Adairsville, Georgia and even parked behind us on a L O N G buddy site.... his nose behind our rear. Check it out.Momma called this her 'sniffing the butt' pic. I thought she told me it was rude to sniff butts??? Oh well, at least he was a respectful driver as we zipped up the highway not following too close behind us as we traveled up the road. Driving and parking nose to butt are two entirely different matters.
Momma LOVES this campground as they greet you with a bag of popcorn upon arrival and Momma LOVES popcorn!!
While I was left guarding the rig today, everyone took off to sample some of the offerings in nearlby Calhoun, Georgia. The first stop was at an Ace Hardware where Dad did a good job talking Steve into purchasing a few extra items not on his list. I think Dad loves to help Steve spend his money, but they were all useful purchases.
Then it was on to the Rock Garden. Now this isn't just a collection of rocks. It is a collection of rock sculptures....miniature castles, churches, rock laid paths and bridges.... whimsical art with attention to detail. I guess you could say the creators have been busy with over 50 featured projects.
'Steve and Carol at the entrance'
Steve worked hard trying to get just the right angle to capture the perfect shot depicting the attention to detail in these works of art.
The afternoon was spent at the New Echota Historical Site where the sprawling Cherokee town stood since 1819. In 1825, it was designated the seat of government for the new Cherokee Nation in a legislative act. Disregarding their traditional clan system for ruling their tribe, the Cherokee Council adopted a model closer to our 3 branch system. The buildings reconstructed on the property included the Supreme Court House, homes, tavern, farm buildings as well as the newspaper office.
Momma said it was mind boggling that a man who couldn't read or write identified the 83 sounds in his Cherokee language, assigned a written symbol for each and was the man who put the Cherokee language in print. The newspaper was printed in both Cherokee and English.
As history has it, a treaty was signed which relinquished Cherokee claims to the lands east of the Mississippi and the Cherokee were removed to the west in what is known as the 'Trail of Tears'. This is the Memorial honoring the 4,000 Cherokee who died on the 'Trail of Tears'I was delighted when everyone returned to the campground, but I'm disappointed that there isn't an off leash area so I can chase my ball. Oh well, I'm still having fun playing with my jug while on a rope. Just don't toss the jug out of range Momma, or you'll be retrieving it!
Looks like a great start!
