From lighthouse to cherries

 September 4, 2025

Turtle Lake CG site 165

Beulah, Michigan

I didn't think you were ever going to get up this morning, Momma.  You must have been very tired for sure.  Do you realize it was 8 am before you began to finally wake up?  Was it because you didn't want to face the 47 degree temperature this morning or was it just a lousy night for sleeping?  At least it is not raining today.  Dad and I took a quick walk this morning, but only after Dad put on a couple of layers of outer wear.  It isn't going to get out of the 50's today.  Are you really going to head towards the water today?

Yep, you really did it.  That water sure looks cold today with the temperature at 57 and a strong wind blowing.

I know you said that you were glad you were wearing several layers while you were waiting outside the lighthouse entrance for your tour to begin.  Can you just imagine if it was blowing snow rather than just the water from the waves hitting the rocks?

That lighthouse doesn't appear to be very tall,

but I guess it gets the job done, lighting the way for ships to safely pass without running aground.

The local people certainly did a great job restoring the lighthouse and the out buildings from 2004 to when it was ready to be opened to the public in 2010.

The first lighthouse keeper lived on the property in 1861

It was a lonely job in a unpopulated area, living off the land,  until a rescue team was added in later years.

The next stop of the day, after driving the shore lined with cottages with docks and boats, was the Cherry Hut Restaurant

where patrons are immersed in cherries from the wallpaper

to the items on the menu.  That's a cherry muffin along side clam chowder
and a burger topped with cherry salsa.

Did you bring home a cherry treat for me as well?  Those cherry Danish look like something you would never share with me!!

I'm Chloe
