Fast moving water

August 6, 2019
Yankton, SD

Now to tell the honest truth, I don't really care about Lewis and Clark.  After all, that all happened years ago.  I care about the here and now....and PLAY TIME!!

But Momma and Dad ran off and left me once again, shortly after arriving in Yankton....and we have the perfect site.  It's a nice back in site that has us situated so that our door side is in the shade in the afternoon.  Add the shade from the tree and you have the perfect play spot on our roomy site.

What is so impressive about a dam?  Okay, so it is a power plant dam with 255,000 gallons of water per second passing through Gavins Point Powerplant.  To put that in perspective, that's enough water to fill 13,000 bathtubs every second.

And as a result, the dam created Lewis and Clark Lake which from the looks of all the boats and docks, it is well used as a recreation spot.

The Lewis and Clark Visitor Center has excellent videos on the creation of the dam by the Core of Engineers as well as the Missouri River and it's wildlife and Lewis and Clark Exploration.

We are camped in Yankton, South Dakota, but to get to the dam, Momma and Dad crossed the bridge to the opposite side of the Missouri River....the Nebraska side.  The state border is in the middle of the river.

And then the Camp Host recommended a delightful restaurant serving fish and chips just a couple of miles from the visitor center.  They got talking with the waitress who was telling them about the flooding in March due to a dam further up the river that broke.  She said houses, garages, trees and debris came rushing down the river past the restaurant that sits on the riverbank.  The water made it up to the restaurant but just short of intruding into the building.

Now they may have found all that interesting but all I kept thinking was..are they EVER coming home?  I realize I got to play before they departed, but that was just a warm up.  Come on Dad, put the pedal to the metal and get back to the campsite!!

I'm Chloe
